Internet Resources to Challenge Today's Students

Special thanks to Maureen Porter, information literacy and technology specialist for Denver Public Schools, for recommending this list of internet sites:

JOURNEY NORTH Journey North engages students in a global study of wildlife migration and seasonal change. K-12 students share their own field observations with classmates across North America. They track the coming of spring through the migration patterns of monarch butterflies, bald eagles, robins, hummingbirds, whooping cranes -- and other birds and mammals, the budding of plants, changing sunlight and other natural events. Find standards-based lesson plans, activities and information to help students make local observations and fit them into a global context. Widely considered a best-practices model for education, Journey North is the nation's premiere "citizen science" project for children. The general public is also welcome to participate.

SPAGHETTI BOOK CLUB The Spaghetti Book Club web site is a place for kids who love to read and talk about books! It is the largest site of book reviews written and illustrated by kids for kids. The Spaghetti Book Club was created as a way to support and encourage kids' love for reading by giving them an opportunity to connect, on a personal level, with the books they are reading and then share their reactions, thoughts, and opinions with family members, friends, and kids around the world.

SCHOLASTIC Scholastic, the global children’s publishing and media company, has a corporate mission supported through all of its divisions of instilling the love of reading and learning for lifelong pleasure in all children. Recognizing that literacy is the cornerstone of a child’s intellectual, personal and cultural growth, Scholastic, for more than 80 years, has created quality products and services that educate, entertain and motivate children and are designed to help enlarge their understanding of the world around them.

MATH LEAGUE A website whose purpose is building student interest and confidence in mathematics through solving worthwhile problems. The Math League is dedicated to bringing challenging mathematics materials to students. The Math League specializes in math contests, books, and computer software designed to stimulate interest and confidence in mathematics for students from the 4th grade through high school. Over 1 million students participate in Math League contests each year. Contest problems are designed to cover a range of mathematical knowledge for each grade level. All of the problems on each contest require no additional knowledge of mathematics beyond the grade level they test.

LEARN TO DRAW CARTOON CHARACTERS Definitely a commercial site, but there is a new cartoon character each month with directions for drawing it step by step. Really a “jumping off” point for a budding cartoonist.

HIDDEN HEROES This project encourages youth from all over the country to shine a spotlight on their local heroes and tell their stories. We believe that there are people in every community who deserve to be called a hero, and this project asks students to become detectives, journalists, storytellers, and filmmakers as they uncover the HIDDEN HEROES in their own back yards.
